Chico Women’s Club History

1913
Founded as the Chico Art Club, creating a space for women to gather around arts, culture, and community life.
1928
The club purchased its lot in the Woodland Park subdivision, laying the groundwork for a permanent home.
1933
Construction of the clubhouse was completed, giving the organization a lasting place to gather.
1948
The club became part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, connecting it to a broader national network.
1950
A fire set by a child arsonist damaged the building and destroyed most club records from before 1950.
1960
The organization officially became the Chico Women’s Club, adopting a new name to avoid confusion with the Chico Creative Art Council.
1969
Membership opened to men for the first time, marking a significant shift in the club’s history.
1970
Air conditioning was added to the clubhouse, improving comfort and usability year-round.
1970 - 1972
Club members helped restore Bidwell Mansion, researching original interiors and contributing hands-on work to support historically accurate renovations.
